Mandela Day 2025: Paws, Purpose, and People Who Care

This year, for Mandela Day, we chose to spend our 67 minutes (and then some) with the forgotten, the waiting, and the voiceless. Sixteen pre-veterinary students from the United States, four dedicated local interns, members of the Oudtshoorn and De Rust Tourism Office, and a dozen of our own team from Cango Wildlife Ranch came together with one shared purpose: to offer time, comfort, and love to the dogs who call this shelter home.

Mandela Day is a call to action. It reminds us that each of us has the power to transform the world by making a difference, however small. In years past, we’ve handed out warm soup in local communities and cleaned up many public spaces. But this year, we chose to support another kind of animal centre… because caring for animals is not just part of what we do, it's at the very core of who we are. And if Mandela Day is about giving back where it matters most, then there is no place more fitting for us than by the side of animals in need.
For two hours, we walked kennel to kennel. Some dogs rushed forward with excitement; others held back with uncertainty. Some carried visible scars, others carried only the invisible kind. We assisted with some feeding, took some of the doggies on walks and shared cuddles with others. But more than anything, we sat with them, spent time with as many as we could, and left with rather heavy hearts knowing that we couldn’t take them all home with us.

One young pup crawled into a volunteer’s lap and promptly fell asleep. Another, elderly dog, leaned in gently as if to say, “Thank you.” There were no words. Only moments. Moments that quietly stitched themselves into our hearts.

This shelter is not fancy. It doesn’t boast shiny branding or high-tech facilities. What it does have is soul. It has a small team with big hearts doing everything they can to keep these animals safe, fed, and hopeful. They work hard, every day, and we know that it is thankless work too. The dogs are either abandoned, picked up off the street, and in some cases are dropped off at their gates. It is a tough and grueling commitment to run an organization of this nature, and every day poses new challenges. It is clear that they are doing a great job with what they have, but they need help too.

With todays visit, our amazing crew arrived with arms full of blankets, toys and large bags of food. But we know that this will only help them for a short while. Therefore, we will be pledging R500 a month to help support Oudtshoorn Diereherberg, and we challenge other local businesses to do the same. A small monthly donation can help provide food, shelter maintenance, pay for the dedicated employees, and possibly even provide the simplest gift of all — comfort.

But the greatest gift? Adoption. There is no better way to change a dog’s life than to welcome them into your own. If adoption isn’t possible, consider fostering. Volunteer for an afternoon. Drop off a bag of food. Share a post online. Every gesture matters.

Nelson Mandela once said, “What counts in life is not the mere fact that we have lived. It is what difference we have made to the lives of others.”

On this day, we tried to make that difference. And in return, the dogs at the Diereherberg gave us something we can’t quite explain — something quiet, raw, and powerful. A reminder of why we are here, and who we are meant to be.
