World Veterinary Day may have passed, but the work it recognises continues every single day at Cango Wildlife. Veterinary care sits quietly at the centre of everything, supporting each animal, guiding every decision, and ensuring that those in our care receive the attention they deserve. It is not always visible to visitors, but it is always present. This year, we took a moment to reflect on the people behind that care. Dr...
The Importance of Recycling
Conserve, Care, Connect is more than a set of values — it’s the foundation of all that we strive towards across all our departments. In retail specifically, it gives us the chance to turn everyday shopping into real impact. Thoughtful choices reduce waste, limit environmental harm, and protect ecosystems. Together with our community, we drive education and clean-up projects that safeguard wildlife and preserve natural resources. But what has this got to do with our Curio shop you may wonder?
As a conservationist, Vanessa Engelbrecht’s goal is to reduce the impact of single-use plastics and similar waste products wherever possible. This includes using material bags instead of plastic when shopping, refusing unnecessary packaging, and choosing recycled and eco-friendly products whenever they are available. These options are becoming more accessible in South Africa, but they still require ongoing advocacy to encourage manufacturers, suppliers, and retailers to make them the standard.
In her role as Retail Manager, she focuses on sourcing eco-friendly and recycled products for the ranch’s gift shop so that guests have the option to support sustainability through their purchases. The shop’s range includes items such as plush toys made from recycled water bottles, where sixteen bottles are transformed into the fibre for a single 30 cm toy, and reusable coffee cups made from bamboo and corn stalks that offer an alternative to the 300 billion single-use cups produced globally each year, most of which are never recycled and end up polluting land and waterways. Other items, like shopping bags, placemats, and linen products, give waste materials a second life while offering practical value to customers.
She believes that each person’s daily choices contribute to a larger change. When we choose wisely, we choose for the planet. Let’s Conserve, Care, and Connect to create a world where both people and wildlife can thrive.

A two day celebration, on 09 and 10 May, dedicated not only to human mothers, but to every form of motherhood we are privileged to witness. Because care is not limited to one species. Across the facility, motherhood takes many shapes. It is seen in the quiet watchfulness of a...
In Oudtshoorn, wildlife is part of daily life. And when that life crosses into homes, schools, or businesses, there is often one person people call first - Mornay Thysse. For years, Mornay has been the steady hand in moments of panic. Safely removing and relocating snakes, protecting both people and wildlife with calm, skill, and respect for the animals he works with. His role is not always easy. It is often urgent,...
